Founded by the sister duo, Kainaz and Firoza , Jophiel®TM is a manifestation of a shared life-long passion ignited by their late father, to celebrate artful embroidery that would otherwise be lost in the corridors of time.
They strive to breathe life into Parsi Gara embroidery, Zardozi and Beadwork, which are centuries old soulful art forms with heavy influences from Persian, Chinese and Indian cultures.
Parsi Gara
Gara is the Gujarati word for a saree (comes from gala or width of the fabric), but what makes a Parsi woman’s Gara worthy of its name is actually the exquisite & intricate hand-embroidery work. The dense single thread embroidery work makes scenes from nature come alive with lyrical design patterns, leaving the base fabric to emerge as a mere outline.
The flat embroidery, the slant of the stitch creating elaborately fluid motifs and patterns— Parsi Gara work can make you pause for breath with its beauty. Working with sometimes as many as up to 30 shades of colors in a single design, using fine silk, cotton, or gold threads, the Gara needle workers are artists indeed !
Zardozi
The Zardozi artisans use the fabric stretched taut on the frame, or adda as a canvas to give form to imaginative designs and motifs. The small flower to the elaborate peacock — every motif is embroidered intricately completely by hand.
Zardozi has survived the test of time and adaptations by artisans have kept the art form relevant on the mainstream fashion stage. The traditional use of gold and silver threads with precious gems were replaced over time with silk, dabkaa, sitaaras and beads, but the luxuriant appeal of the handicraft was kept intact.
